Abstract

In 1989, the slogan »Wir sind das Volk!« (»We are the people!«) was used by the citizens of the former GDR to motivate their desire for more political freedom by referring to their constitutional rights. 25 years later, the slogan is now articulated by the populist movement »Pegida« (»Patriot Europeans against the Islamization of Europe«) in the frame of their weekly rallies. By the means of discours linguistics a corpus with Facebook postings is examinated, focussing on the means of argumentation and lexical expressions used by Pegida members aiming on substantiating their own positions and derogating their opponents.
