Abstract

Die Möglichkeit, die Welt semantisch zu kategorisieren, gilt als eine der wesentlichen Leistungen
der menschlichen Sprache. Besonders zum Tragen kommt diese Leistung im Bereich der Abstrakta,
deren Stellung und Gruppierung im Wortschatz Rückschlüsse auf kognitive und soziale Strukturen
zulässt. In dem vorliegenden Beitrag soll am Beispiel des Wortfeldes »Volk« anhand einer Reihe
von linguistischen Experimenten ein Verfahren entwickelt werden, das es ermöglicht, eben jene
sprachlichen Kategorisierungsprinzipien aufzudecken, d. h., Bedeutungsstrukturen in Wortfeldern
zu ermitteln, deren Prototypen zu bestimmen und Bedeutungsähnlichkeiten zwischen Wörtern zu
messen.

The ability to semantically categorize the world is one of the principle benefits of human speech.
This advantage is especially significant in the field of abstract expressions, the positioning and
grouping of which within the vocabulary allow us to draw conclusions about cognitive and social
structures. In this article, a series of linguistic experiments involving the lexical field of »Volk«
are illustratively employed to develop a procedure for discovering such principles of linguistic
categorization, i. e., for revealing semantic structures in lexical fields, determining prototypes, and
measuring the semantic similarity between words.
